ENThe article tells about the personality of Professor Pranė Dundulienė (12/02/1910 - 27/02/1991), her winding road to science, and her multifaceted (teaching, scientific, and educational) activity. Pranė Stukėnaitė was born into the family of poor peasants Emilija and Vincas Stukėnas in the village of Pilypai, Švenčionys district, on 12 February 1910. She began to read books at the age of five. Having started school, she was a diligent pupil. Having earned some money from odd jobs, Pranė continued her studies in the Lithuanian gymnasiums of Švenčionys and Vilnius. In 1935 she entered Stephen Bathory University. On 8 May 1939 she defended her masters thesis “Monograph on the Ethnography of Marcinkonys and the Surrounding Villages”, and was conferred the degree of Master of Philosophy. After graduation Dundulienė worked in the Museum of the Lithuanian Scientific Society, the Institute of Ethnology of the Academy of Sciences, and from 1 September 1944 until her death - at Vilnius University. She taught the subjects of Lithuanian, Eastern Slavic and Baltic Ethnography, Sources of Ethnography, and the History of Primitive Society. For some time she also taught at the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute. She was the supervisor of 200 course and graduation works, 4 dissertations, and was a reviewer and opponent of many of them. In the autumn of 1944 together with her colleagues Dundulienė founded the Chair of Ethnography at the Historical Faculty. She also founded the Circle of Ethnographers of the Students’ Scientific Society of the Historical Faculty, and led it until 1972. From 1950 she held annual ethnographic expeditions, and compiled extensive questionnaires for systematic recording of ethnographic material. The collected data about the Lithuanian material and spiritual culture is unique, as many ancient villages described during the expeditions are already extinct. The collected objects gave the beginning to or supplemented the collections of the museums of regional ethnography of various districts of Lithuania. Referring to the ethnographic material collected during the expeditions and other research, Dundulienė wrote more than 500 scholarly and popular science articles, 15 monographs, and left quite many manuscripts. Dundulienė was a member of the Republican Council of Folk Traditions, “Žinija” Society and four scientific councils, and a contributor to the Atlas of Baltic Ethnography, the Lithuanian Soviet Encyclopedia, and other reference books. Her educational activity - lectures given in various cities and on the Lithuanian radio, and a great many popular articles - is also important. The perpetuation of professor Pranė Dundulienė's name. The wide activity of Dundulienė did not receive proper acclaim in the Soviet period, with the exception of several awards granted by important institutions. When Lithuania regained independence, the professor’s name was perpetuated by anniversary events and articles. The oral form - lectures, papers, or memorial speeches at various events (conferences, meetings, festive or anniversary events, radio programmes) - is an important, but unrecorded, and thus, short-lived form of spreading information and honouring the professor’s name. The written form - popular articles in the regional and republican press about Dundulienė’s expeditions, new ethnographic museums established in the regions, her communication with students, and book presentations. The visual form - the professor’s manuscripts, facsimiles, printed material (articles and books), photographs, and the ethnographic material that she had collected were shown in exhibitions held on the occasion of her anniversaries in Vilnius University (1995,2000 and 2010), the Public Library of the Municipality of the Švenčionys district (1995 and 2010), and the libraries of the National Museum of Lithuania and the Academy of Sciences, Kupiškis, Skapiškis and other towns. Events dedicated to Professor Pranė Dundulienė’s centennial anniversary - a conference, exhibitions, and publications in Lithuania and Ukraine - are a nice sign of respect and the most important way of honouring her name today. Visions. New forms of perpetuating the professor’s memory should be proposed - television and radio programmes, a letter-headed envelope, a postage stamp, an anniversary medal, memorial plaques in Vilnius University, the room of the professors Pranė and Bronius Dundulis in the Historical Faculty of Vilnius University, Professor Pranė Dundulienės grant and award, and the publishing of epistolary material, collections of articles and memoirs, and a monograph.
