ENThe article discusses chosen dramas by Kostas Ostrauskas (1926-2012), a Lithuanian emigre playwright, in the context of his treatment of the figure of William Shakespeare. Throughout his writing career, Ostrauskas was heavily influenced by Shakespeare's oeuvre. In some of his dramas, he included Shakespeare as one of the characters. The following texts: "Stratfordo sodininkas" ("The Gardener from Stratford", 1996), "Shakespeariana" (1999-2001), "Žemaitė sutinka Šekspyrą" ("Žemaitė Meets Shakespeare", 2006), and "Ir Žemaitė, ir Šekspyras, ir Šekspyras, ir Žemaitė" ("Both Žemaitė and Shakespeare, and Shakespeare and Žemaitė") depict both Ostrauskas's attachment to and his difficult attitude towards Shakespeare. Drawing upon the theory of the death of the author, Ostrauskas paradises Shakespeare, challenges his authority, and comes forward not only as his successor, but, above all, as his reader.
