Summary / Abstract:

ENThe church of Plateliai with a belfry at the gates in the northwest side of the churchyard is in the southern part of the town on a small hill on the north headland. Further to the north of the church there is a town centre with a wider street and a triangular square on Plungė road. It is thought that in the 16th c. the town was built in other location at the lake, but after the castle lost its significance the town relocated to the present area. To the south of the church there is an estate, the owner Stanislovas Kęsgaila was the founder of the church. The church is recorded in the inventory of the year 1585, but there are more than 50 brassieres in Plateliai mentioned. It is not possible to make objective conclusions as to why the church was distanced from the square without thorough examination of the town’s urban activities. However, it may be stated that having important town composition elements in different locations, the whole architecture of the town loses its completeness and panoramic unity.
