ENPetras Zablockas is a poet of tragic fate, one of the most prominent Lithuanian lyric writers in exile. His early lyric poems are characterized by the reflections of his native Biržai region – its nature, people and cultural realities. They also give a meaning to the poet’s publicistic writing and his reminiscences. Exiled to the labour camps, Zablockas did not stop to create. His exile lyric poems are among the best alongside A. Miškinis’ and other poets’ poetry. In Zablockas’ poems written in the years of exile we will not find the horrific reflections of the everyday life of the Siberian labour camps, the documentation of the daily life of a prisoner, as well as the intonations of curse for his tormentors. All these moments in his creative work seem to be suppressed by the sensitive language of the poet’s soul, which opens up a romantic flow of reminiscences of his native land – fields, meadows and footpaths, which reveals a pain of this loss. The characteristic feature of Zablockas’ exile poetry is subtle lyricism, a simple and suggestive word that opens up the honest truth of human existence, a metaphor based on the natural world. Zablockas’ poems show a special listening to nature; his poem is composed of various analogies of man and nature, associations, connections, points. It is characterized by gentle musicality. Zablockas’ lyrical I is a poor traveler in the world, homeless and life-strangling, disturbed by storms of life. Experience of homelessness as the most painful destiny is one of the most frequent spiritual states. “Going” is the most common situation of Zablockas’ poetry. He “is going” home, to his native land, his village, his town. The situation of returning to his homestead is extremely common. The grief in the lyrical poetry of Petras Zablockas does not turn into the stinging nonbeing: in the poems full of homesickness and melancholy notes, a ray of hope and beauty of the world is seen.
