ENThe present paper deals with the problem of similarity of Baltic and Slavic phonetic changes such as palatalization, iotation, consonant assimilation, metathesis, epenthesis etc. In spite of a similar list of the main phonetic changes the analysis reveals that there is no reason for postulation of common Balto-Slavic protolanguage. The similarity is rather superficial since the changes under consideration in Baltic and in Slavic are of absolutely different reasons and results.
