ENThe article analyses the general programme of basic education of Lithuanian language and literature, regulating the literary education in the concentre of 9-10 grades (l-II in gymnasiums). Big attention is paid to research to what extent and how the usage of children's and youth literature, with excellent works on the thematic aspects of the programme, is used to educate the young reader. Children's and youth literature is considered to be an important part of literature with valuable canonical works. The two young literary works of the programme, Joste Gaardens novel Sophie's World and Mark Haddon's novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, are discussed in more detail. The article also suggests to use other valuable works to educate schoolchildren such as Timothee de Fombelle's books about Toby Alone, problem novels, valuable autobiographical works of children and youth literature, etc. It is concluded that if we easily exclude reading and analysis of children's and youth literature in schools, we end up impoverishing the pupil's world. Therefore, it is very important for such literature to be included in the general programme of basic education of Lithuanian language and literature in the future - from I й to 12th grades. Figuratively speaking, good works of children's and youth literature must "be on duty" in every concentre of each grade's literary programme. [From the publication]
