Генеалогия первого президента Литвы А. Сметоны: факты и предположения

ENRecently there was an opinion that the first President of Lithuania Antanas Smetona could be a descendant of a noble family. This presumption is based on some armorials, although A. Smetona's earlier biographies written back in the years between wars were quite contrary. First family tree of President A. Smetona was drawn by Kazimieras Gasparavičius. It is based on metrics of Roman Catholic churches and undeniable facts. After the reliability of information in the family tree of A. Smetona was examined, his genealogy was tracked till XVII century, however it is almost impossible to connect facts in the armorials ant other documents with A. Smetona's family line. Therefore, there are two possibilities: to believe that President A. Smetona is the heir to the nobility of the GDL or to deny it and rely on the records of the XIX century. [From the publication]
