ENThe field research conducted in Lithuania in the period of 2011-2013 reveals that funerary singing is a living tradition in the region of Vilnius up to now and that it is an integral component of contemporary būriai ceremonies. The aim of the article is to analyse conceptual metaphors used to depict the phenomenon of death in funeral songs. The research material consists of most frequently performed funeral songs in-cluded into the anthology Vilniaus krašto lenkų laidotuviųgėsmės (The Polish Funeral Songs in Vilnius Region) (2013). The research results show that similarly to phraseol-ogy the conceptualisation of death in the analysed funeral songs is diverse and seven different ways ofportraying death can be distinguished. However, the most frequently employed conceptual metaphor is DEATH IS A JOURNEY.
