ENThe author recounts the fates of Baltic diplomats after the Soviet occupation in the 1940s, which entailed violations of international law, when diplomatic immunity was helpless against the actions of the repressive structures of a foreign state. Diplomats were arrested, imprisoned and shot by the Soviet repressive structures. Several Baltic diplomats were living in democratic countries at the time, so they did not lose their status. But they left their diplomatic posts only in case of death. The fates of the Baltic diplomats are linked and they create a paradoxical situation: the USA and the USSR were allies at the time of WWII, but the Baltic diplomats sought refuge from the Soviet occupation in the USA.
