ENThe article deals with a specific field of Čiurlionis’ artistic legacy, metaphysical poetics. The affinity of related words “silence”, “quietness”, “reticence” (in the Lithuanian language sharing the same root of the word) is revealed in the archaic Lithuanian language and their semantic affinity. In the process of analysis, the author attempts to single out individual artistic means of the fine art and music used by a Lithuanian composer and artist who aimed to reveal symbolism of silence, quietness, peace. The paper attempts to search for the sense and purpose of metaphysical poetics in the piano prelude d-moll grounding on analysis and revealing the affinity with both Lithuanian folklore embracing the features of high ancient art, spirituality, religiousness, solemnity and rhythmic pace and intonation of ancient Russian and Greek chants. Tones, facture, rhythm, intonations, imitations of organic sound and other components of the prelude appear to be universal means finding the composer’s intention to create the condition of contemplation and render the images of sacrum. Analysis of Čiurlionis’ pictures “Christ”, “Silence” reveals the semantics of silence and quietness through static, dynamic appearance, minimalism of the picture, the ideal form, monochromatic depiction, and absence of events. The striving of the artist to reach poetical archipelagos of silence are the conditions for awareness of and maintaining the true values of existence, the only one embracing all matters and phenomena of the absolute sense.
