ENThe article analyses the ways in which family festivals are perceived by the representatives of different generations and criteria according to which calendar festivals are called family festivals. The analysis of the conceptions defined by Vilnius inhabitants of different age has shown that in most cases calendar festival is recognized as a family celebration. The research revealed that although the important criteria defining such festivals as family ones are the category of participants, celebration time and place, the decisive factor depends upon formed ritual, its transmission from generation to generation and the opportunity to recognize this festival “as own”, celebrated from childhood.
