LTŠiame straipsnyje gvildenama viena moralinė dilema, su kuria susidūrė žydų tarybos ir kuri atskleidžiama žydų rašytuose dienoraščiuose, kronikose ir užrašuose nacių okupacijos metais. Straipsnyje aptariami Vilniaus (Vilna), Kauno (Kovno), Ašmenos ir Šiaulių (Shavli) getai, kurie priklausė Ostlando Reichskomisariatui. [...]
ENThe present paper will focus on one type of a moral dilemma faced by Jewish councils as reflected in diaries, chronicles, and notes that were written by Jews during the Nazi occupation. The ghettos focused on in the article will be Vilnius (Vilna), Kaunas (Kovno), Ašmenė, and Šiauliai (Shavli) which were a part of Reichs- komisarriat Ostland. [...] The texts referred to in the present article were written in the midst of terrible events in Nazi ghettos in Lithuania. The writers were members of the Jewish intelligentsia who were directly connected or in one way or another close to the Jewish authorities of the ghetto. What I have chosen to examine is the distressing attempt of the members of the Lithuanian Jewish councils to cope with the German order to turn some of their fellow Jews over to the occupation authorities. Since mass executions of Jews had already been carried out in Lithuania, it was clear to the remaining Jews what fate was awaiting the Jews handed over to the Germans. The questions posed in the present paper are the following: in what terms was this dilemma presented, how did those facing this dilemma deal with it, and, finally, what choice, if any, did they have?.
