ENThe volume of the Metrics of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania being offered to the reader represents the copy of Book of Records № 70 as per numeration of S. Ptashitsky. The original copy of Book of Records № 70 is being stored in the Russian State Archives of Ancient Acts (389/70). This is one of the typical Books of Metrics with the documents published in the reign of Stephen Batoriy. The Book begins with the document composed in August of 1583 (the exact date of composition of the document is not reflected), and the document composed on December 15, 1585 finalizes the Book. The Book gathered the valuable data on the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and its documents have various character. Mainly there are the privileges by means of which the Grand Duke drew up grants on posts, acres, peasants, various sources of income and their confirmation. The data of the Book clarify the activity of the chancellery of the GDL and they can be used for studying historical clerical work, problems of historical geography, genealogy of gentry's families. But the main part of the documents concerns the issues of landed property, and they enable to trace development of privately-owned and national land tenures. Book of Records № 70 of the Metrics of the GDL contains the data of more then 600 persons. Except for Grand Dukes Zhigimont August and Stephen Batoriy, the clerks Lev Sapega, Ventslav Akgripa, pan of Vilnya, Cancellor of the GDL, headman of Berestye and Kobrin Ostafiy Volovich, castellan of Mensk, clerk of the GDL Yan Glebovich and others are often mentioned.
