ENIn the article an attempt to analyse labour market situation as well as the status of employment and unemployment statistics in Lithuania of the interwar period is made. A great amount of information is accumulated in the Lithuanian statistical annals. Attention is focussed on the evaluation of the situation in the agriculture and industry during the period. Employment and unemployment are analysed, the status of statistics as well as the sources of information gathering are discussed. Problems of labour market surveys and the ways to improve accumulation of information about labour market are examined in the article. Historical aspects of the labour market and its statis tics, have, practically, not been studied in our country. Other themes analysed in the work - are problems of labour market sur veys and the development of population employment and unemployment statistics after the recovery of independence. Different data source survey are given a careful consideration. While labour market statistics is improving, it is necessary to speak more broadly about the differences of ąuantitative characteristics of employment and unemployment which are seen in different sources of data. For the evaluation of quantitative labour market trends reference to various sources of data is indispensable. They are: common (traditional) data on changes of population employment received from the Depart ment of Statistics, labour market surveys, statistics of insured persons re ceived from the SODRA, Lithuanian labour exchange data on unemploy ment. In our opinion, comparative calculation should propagate and make a more extensive use of labour force data which are an essential tool in making a sočiai portrait of labour market.
