Summary / Abstract:

ENDiscussions about gender equality are not new for Lithuanian society. Article 29 of the Lithuanian Constitution stipulates that all persons are equal before the law, the court, and the state institutions of officers. A person must not have his or her rights restricted in any way, or be granted any privileges on the basis of sex, race, nationality, language, origin, social status, religion, convictions or opinions. Provisions of other laws specify constitutional norms. In 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania - Restatement Seimas committed itself to adhere to the principles of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and on the same day adopted a resolution to accede to the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the 1966 International Covenant on Civic and Political Rights and the Optional Protocol to the 1966 International Covenant on Civic and Political Rights. In 1995 the Seimas ratified the 1950 European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and other Protocols Additional to this Convention. Dependence of violated human rights is based on national legal framework and using international Human Rights Law and mechanism. Despite this, legal provisions are not the only way for improvement of gender equality.
