Paryskie poszukiwania książek. List Karola Wyrwicza do Józefa Stanisława Sapiehy
Alternative Title:
Search for books in Paris: a letter of Karol Wyrwicz to Józef Stanisław Sapieha
Summary / Abstract:

ENJózef Stanisław Sapieha belonged to the group of Saxon erudites – people who shared a common passion for collecting books, creating libraries and disseminating their own collections. Collecting books from an early age, he also tried to monitor foreign markets and, if possible, purchase works in foreign languages. One of the intermediaries in acquiring foreign publications for Sapieha was the Jesuit Karol Wyrwicz, who at the turn of 1753 and 1754 constantly stayed outside his homeland. Taking advantage of the priest’s presence in Paris, Sapieha instructed Wyrwicz to review the off er of French booksellers and buy several books. After just a few days in the city, the Jesuit began to search for books and became acquainted with the Paris book market. On 4 August 1753 he wrote a letter to Sapieha, in which he presented the results of his work and his own suggestions for shopping. Th e article includes the analysis of the content of the letter, the characteristics of its author and recipient along with a critical edition of the source.
