ENThis historiographic study deals with bindings from 15–17th-century Cyrillic printed books of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (WLLAS ). What is typical for a binding of a 15–17th-century Cyrillic book? To answer this question, we selected a comparative method. The methodological essence of a comparative study is the method underlying statements about similarities and differences of objects or events. In this case, essential features of the bindings from the old Cyrillic books were the object of comparison. The bindings were analysed in regard to the subject of the books, placing emphasis on liturgical books and devotional books intended for individual reading. The aim of the study was to establish what features were characteristic for the bindings of old Cyrillic books kept in WLLAS . For this purpose, we studied the origins of the WLLAS Rossica collection and carried out a geographical analysis of bindings of 15-17th-century Cyrillic books. We have discovered that the binding of an old Cyrillic book has a long tradition extending back over ages. The binding of a typical 15–17th-century old Cyrillic book usually has the following features: leather cover richly decorated with ornate embossing, full binding, wooden boards. Such books also often have clasps and decorated block edges. [From the publication]
