Summary / Abstract:

ENIncrease in the research interest in the history of money determines the topicality of the analysis of the role of Russian coins in market life of Belarus during the War of 1654-1667. The purpose of the work is to analyze role of "yefimki s priznakami" in money circulation of Belarusian lands. These coins appeared as a result of countermarking of West European thalers at Moscow Mint by two - rider and date - counterstamps in 1655. Material and methods. The study is based on the materials of Polotsk Magistrate Register of 1656-1657, which is kept in the National Historical Archive of Belarus. Findings and their discussion. "Yefimki s priznakami" came to Belarusian lands during the Rusian-Polish War of 1654-1667. In Polatsk the most popular name for them was "imprinted thalers". Local population accepted them for deposits and left as inheritance. Yefimki were also used for paying for goods, borrowing and paying debts. Conclusion. Polotsk citizens recognized counterstamped thalers as a valid instrument of payment.
