Summary / Abstract:

EN1. Most commonly in the Lithuanian Linguistics Percipient is described as a function of state of mind. In the Foreign Linguistics this actant is cold Experiencer [Чейф 1975: 167-170; Saeed 2003: 140; Van Valin 2001: 27; Тестелец 2001: 213]. Some researchers [Van Valin 2001: 27] understand Percipient as a perceiver, emoter, cognizer. The other researchers [Halliday 2004: 197] analyse this function in 'mental' clauses of emotion, cognition and perception. Within the general class of 'mental' clauses, there are four different types: 'perceptive', 'cognitive', 'desiderative' and 'emotive'. 2. In the article the function of Percipient is analysed as presupposed by 1) desiderative verbs, verbs, 2) denoting state of emotion, 3) emotional relation, 4) state of thinking, 5) sense. The Percipient is defined as a function the actant of which comprehends and experiences psychical mental state. 3. A typical expression of the Percipient function is the nominative case. The function of the Percipient presupposed by transitive verbs is expresed by nominative case. The function of the Percipient presupposed by intransitive (and reflexive) verbs in expresed by dative or nominative case. 4. The function of Percipient is mostly characteristic of persons.
