Summary / Abstract:

ENPresenting symbolic names, a group of Lithuanian proper names in Latvian has hardly been investigated at all. The article focuses on symbolic names reflecting the life of Lithuania. The focus is on the Lithuanian symbolic names of recent years used in the Latvian press. The symbolic names under investigation include the names and titles of companies, sport clubs and teams, newspapers and other. Graphic expression of symbolic names varies from inverted commas to capital letters of different fonts. The results of the overview have shown that the Latvian press faces a number of problems. The most frequent of them is a failure to preserve the diacritic marks, particularly those which discriminate Lithuanian long vowels, etc. A genereal impression is that the Latvian texts are not particularly interested in giving symbolic names in the most precise manner. It is possible to find different incorrect variants of Lithuanian symbolic names usage in Latvian texts.
