Summary / Abstract:

ENThe material of the article is based on the 18th c. manuscripts of the parishes in Kaunas region. The locality of toponyms is grounded on the Lithuanian cartography of the beginning of 20th century. The existing terms are taken from the Reference Book of the Lithuanian administrative-territorial distribution. Place-names derived from physiographic terms are bilingual dublets: suffix structures (Dembina: Ąžuolinė), prefix structures (Zaborze: Užušilia). However structures which do not have Lithuanian counterparts also occur (Perlazy: Perelozai) i well as the suffix structures with the Polish suffix -owa (Debowa: Dambava). Place-names that are derived from the names of trade, business and defence objects are formed from the Slavonic appelatives or German words borrowed into Polish, common words and suffix structures (Sloboda, , S: Krzyž, Slobod-ka, Smoln-n.i) as well as complex structures (Buda stara: Senoji Būda, Buda wysoka: now Aukštoji Huta Stara remains Naujoji Ūta). The words that are derived from the terms of landownership and its expansion are also Slavonic appelatives: common pluralia tantum (Przydatki: Pridotki) compounds (Nowopole: Naujalaukis) and complex structures (Wysoki Dvor, Aukštadvaris) An place-names that are used today, common and suffix structures the phonetically 'Lithuanianized', whereas in compound and complex structures the attribute constituents are usually translated (Buda Stara: Senoji Būda, Wysoki Dwor: Aukštadvaris).
