Summary / Abstract:

ENWe have proper names based on the composite or word group meaning 'oak island' both in Latvian (e.g. Ozolsala), as well as in Lithuanian (e.g. Ąžuolų sala), Estonian (e.g. Tammsaare), and Finnish (e.g. Tammis-aari). There are groups of respective homonymic names in all of the languages mentioned above (e.g. Ozolsala a village in the Aiviekste parish and an island on the Daugava river in the Sērene parish). One of the ono-mastic homonyms uses to be known wider than the other ones (e.g. Estonian Tammsaare 'one of the best known authors of Estonian literature'), and we need a term to denote them. An appropriate term in Latvian would be onomastisko homonīmu rindas dominante. It is important to know, is this one homonym the best known or is it not? By using one of the onomastic homonyms for secondary naming (e.g. for the naming of streets), there can arise some confusion, if one uses the less known homonym. We have an undoubted "dominante" among Estonian (see above) and Finnish {Tammi-saari 'a former town, now part of the town Raseborg') names, and we do not have at all the main homonym among respective Lithuanian names. The "dominante" among Latvian names Ozolsala is most probably the name of a settlement located in Krastpils municipality, although by now some discussion would be needed to clarify is it still the most known among homonyms as it was before some 15-20 years.
