Summary / Abstract:

ENThe movement of the ethnic music revival in Lithuania began at the end of the 19th century and has been connected to the process of the national liberation movement of the same century. The movement was one of the most fundamental means of consolidation of the Lithuanian national and cultural identity. In the beginning of this movement the images of the historical and literature personages were created. These images reflected the events of the history of Lithuanian state and nation. One of the most well known personages was the image of the "old kanklės player - a pagan priest", which popularized the idea of playing this ethnic musical instrument. After the study of Zenonas Slavinskas in 1937, when the creation of this personage was evaluated very critically, no more new personages appeared until 1968, when the movement of the authentic folklore took place in Lithuania. The woman "singer of sutartinės (polyphonic folk songs) prophetess" as a new collective personage was developed according to scientific research of this kind of ethnic music. The regional memory is a noticeable feature in the activity of all folk ensembles and groups of folk art. This memory is reflected not only in the regional repertoire but even in the names of these groups which are connected to the names of the localities, hydronyms, names of the samples of ethnic music and musical instruments as well to the names of the ancient territories of the Baltic tribes and mythological characters. The ideas of the "ancient Baltic religion" are manifested in the movement of the ethnic music as well, because the calendar and ritual folklore preserved a lot of features of ancient beliefs, which are in the focus of the repertoires of the folk group "Kūlgrinda". All things considered, the following conclusion can be made: the impersonation of the historical memory is important in the movement of folklore music at the end of the 19th - the beginning of the 21s' cc. in Lithuania and this feature is noticeable in the activity of all folklore ensembles and folk art groups.
