Summary / Abstract:

ENBaltic (Latvian, Lithuanian, Old Prussian) place-names can give some testimony about (hypothetical) portages in the Eastern Balticum. We have a Latvian-Estonian bordertown Valka, which can be possibly connected with an ancient portage, but the credibility of such connection is not high. We have in Lithuania in the northern part of the land and probably in Neringa (in the southwestern part of Lithuania) place-names, which can be more or less credibly (nevertheless hypothetically) connected with ancient portages, and we have some inicrotoponyms in Eastern Lithuania (in the district of Molėtai) testifying about real existence of recent relatively small portages. In Old Prussia there are three villages, having names that can be hypothetically connected with portages. We can also say, that the linguistic evidence of existence of important ancient portages in the lands of Baltic peoples - Latvians, Lithuanians, Old Prussians - is very hypothetical. Nevertheless there is a relatively high credibility: some smaller portages have been there. [From the publication]
