Summary / Abstract:

EN1. On the Subject of the Origin of the Town Name Daugai and the name of the Lake Daugų ežeras. A. Vanagas associates the name of the town Daugai in Alytus region with a person's proper name *Daugas, producing an existing surname Daugčvičius in substantiation of this etymon. A. Vanagas originates the compound name of the lake Daugų ežeras from the name of the town Daugai. A different, opposite interpretation of the origin of these localities (i. e., the name of the town and the lake) is also possible. It could be justified by several additional facts: a) only non-compound, identical forms of the locality and the lake Daugi, Daugie, Dowgy, etc. are found in historical sources; b) the size and depth of the lake (1,099 ha and 42 m respectively) allows us to think that the form of the name of the lake was noncompound (a more recent name Didžiulis confirms the fact); c) toponimical context from the living language allows us to associate the name of the lake with the words describing size, quantity, abundance. Lith. daug, dangus, daugis, etc. In such a case the name of the town would have a hydronimic origin from the name of the lake *Daugai or *Daugas.2. On the Subject of the Origin of the Oeconym Turmantas A. Vanagas considers the name of the little town Turmantas in Zarasai region to be an oeconym of an entirely vague origin. He tries to associate it with a person's proper name *Turmantas that is being reconstructed. Additional data, i. e., oeconyms of neighboring districts, such as, Blidkmantas, Marimantas, Belmonte (Daugpilis region), Belmdntas (Breslauja region) and others, allows us to think that all these names are compound and have the second component - mant-, -mont-, (cf. bcllo monte „gražus kalnas”, „beautiful mountain”). The first component of the oeconym Turmantas is a person’s proper name Turas.
