Summary / Abstract:

ENOlga Dubeneckienė-Kalpokienė is an outstanding participant of Lithuanian theatre, ballet and art history. Although there is enough information about her life and creation in the interwar and soviet periods. it has been difficult to unite all the material into a proper significant narrative. No information was found in the Russian archives as she studied in different private courses which did not belong to Imperial institutions. To imagine her environment during her studies in Petersburg, materials of the Western European modernism and Russian Silver Age were taken as a general context of that time. Three characters of the Italian comedy are taken as three psychological types (coquette Colombina, melancholic Pierrot and swindler Harlequin) and the representatives of the bohemic lifestyle. Olga Schwede, while she lived in Petersburg, as a dancer participated in a variety of theatres such as miniature and cabaret theatre ("Halt of Comedians", "The Stray Dog Cabaret" and et cetera). In those activities it was essential to demonstrate, preserve the elements of experiment and improvisation. She mastered the biomechanical principals of the theatre director and actor Vsevolod Meyerhold, which she later adapted in her dancing studio and modelling for the photographs. In 1918 she came to Lithuania with her husband architect Vladimiras Dubeneckis. Next year she performed in pantomime "Colombina’s Scarf" in Kaunas. Unfortunately she did not reflect a romantic character (Colombina) but she resembled more of Harlequin, Pierrot. Therefore she was depicted as an Harlequin and Pierrot by her friend artist Barbora Didžiokienė. It is believed that these two male commedia dell’arte characters add more information about the artist`s life and perfomance.
