Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article “Theory and Practice of Autobiography in Theatre” presents the theory of Philippe Lejaune’s autobiography, defines and compares modernistic and postmodernistic conception of autobiographical theatre, introduces and epitomizes the global experiences of autobiography, comparing them with Lithuanian context. The aim of this work is to review the theory and the practice of autobiography in theatre, grouping the world’s cases of autobiographical theatre into types and illustrating them with examples. After P. Lejaune’s researches there were many others authors who were speaking about autobiography as a fiction as well. Autobiographical theatre started in the beginning of XX century, after a half of century there were developed new methods and in our days we have theatres which were created taking over existing techniques. Since emerging in the beginning of XX century, the autobiographical theatre was constantly changing and developing, taking new forms. Therefore, till the beginning of XXI century, this theatre evolved into 4 types: therapeutic, aesthetic, monoperformance and educational theatre. Lithuanian autobiographical theatre has been formed only in the end of XX century. We have few examples of such a kind of performances.
