LTMiestai, ypač didieji, yra svarbūs šalies apgyvendinimo sistemos elementai, pagrindiniai socialinės, kultūrinės ir ekonominės raidos centrai, todėl jų struktūrinės transformacijos atspindi esmines urbanistinės raidos problemas ir ateities iššūkius. Disertacijoje nagrinėjami Baltijos šalių miestų urbanistinės struktūros kaitos erdviniai dėsningumai. Disertacijos tikslas – atskleisti Lietuvos miestų urbanistinės struktūros kaitos po 1990 m. dėsningumus ir įvertinti jų poveikio tolesnei miestų raidai mastą. Pristatomame tyrime nagrinėjamas dešimties Lietuvos regionų (apskričių) centrų ir jų apylinkių šiandieninės teritorinės raidos kompleksiškumas, jį sąlygojantys veiksniai, procesai ir jų padariniai. Įvadiniame skyriuje aptariama tiriamoji problema, darbo aktualumas, aprašomi tyrimo objektas, darbo tikslas ir uždaviniai, pristatoma tyrimų metodika, darbo mokslinis naujumas ir rezultatų praktinė reikšmė. Pirmasis skyrius skirtas tyrimo problemą nagrinėjančių šaltinių apžvalgai. Jame aptariami šiuolaikinių miestų urbanistinės struktūros ir jos formavimosi teoriniai aspektai. Skyriuje analizuojama šiuolaikinių miestų teritorinės raidos problematika, urbanistinės struktūros charakteristikos ir jos kaitos dėsningumai. Antrajame skyriuje aptariamos urbanistinės struktūros kaitos tyrimų kryptys. Skyriuje pristatomos urbanistinės formos kompleksinio tyrimo gairės, pagal kurias formuluojama Lietuvos miestų struktūrinės kaitos tyrimo metodika. Trečiajame skyriuje pristatomas dešimties Lietuvos miestų išorinės plėtros po 1990 m. tyrimas. Skyriuje aprašomi pagrindiniai nagrinėtų Lietuvos miestų urbanistinės struktūros erdvinės kaitos veiksniai ir procesai. ENMajor cities are key centres of social, cultural and economic development, therefore their structural transformations reflect fundamental issues and future challenges of urban development in the countries. The thesis discusses the current state of cities in the Baltic countries and examines spatial patterns of their transformation. The dissertation is aimed at unfolding patterns of changing spatial structure of Lithuanian cities after 1990 and assessing the impact of various spatial transformations for further development of their urban regions. The study presents evidences for complex nature of current territorial development in and around ten regional (county) centres in Lithuania and reveals influencing factors, dominant spatial processes and their effects. The dissertation consists of introduction, three chapters, general conclusions, lists of references and author’s publications on the subject, and five annexes. The introductory chapter reveals the investigated problem, the relevance of the thesis, describes object and methodology of the research, the aim and tasks of the work, presents main arguments on scientific novelty of the thesis and practical significance of its results, and is concluded with defended statements. Chapter 1 presents overview of sources dealing with the subject of the thesis. It discusses main issues of spatial development trends in contemporary cities and urban regions as well as resulting attributes of their urban structure. The chapter ends with conclusions and formulation of tasks.Chapter 2 describes directions for research of changing urban structures. It presents guidelines of the complex research of urban form and discusses possibilities of their application for studying urban expansion in Lithuanian context. Consequently, the methodology for research of structural transformations of cities is formulated. The chapter ends with conclusions. Chapter 3 focuses on the results of the study, dealing with urban expansion of ten cities in Lithuania after 1990. It presents main factors and processes of recent spatial transformations in analysed Lithuanian urban regions and emphasises resulting structural characteristics of their urban form. Based on the findings, several options and scenarios for coordinated spatial development of major urban centres and their surroundings are discussed. The chapter ends with conclusions. 6 scientific publications on the topic of the dissertation have been published. Of these, four articles have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, one article – in peer-reviewed proceedings of a national conference, another – in proceedings of an international conference. 6 presentations on the subject have been made in national and international scientific conferences.
