Summary / Abstract:

ENThis paper presents the results of research of management of rural tourism projects in Lithuania supported by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and examination of the competences of projects initiators and executors on project management issues. The study was conducted taking into account the following aspects: the analysis of markets, the structure of projects, duration of works, the sequence, the dependence, the budget of projects, quality, the organisation and selection of staff. The following research methods were applied: problem-solving and comparative analysis of the Lithuanian and foreign scientific publications, the analysis of documents and statistical data of rural tourism projects to obtain the support from the European agricultural fund for rural development, case analysis and the questionnaire survey method. Seeking to examine the project compliance with the project management theory, two projects were selected which were considered to be suitable for obtaining the support from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. The analysis of case studies of rural tourism projects that have obtained the support from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development showed that rural tourism project development is partly being carried out through project management theory, but in order to develop high-quality and realistic projects, to achieve the projected indicators, it is necessary to draw attention to the project work breakdown structure, their sequence, to predict potential risks which is most often associated with delays and changes in funding sources. It is highly possible that the project initiators as well as project executors and owners of rural residencies lack project management skills. To verify this assumption, we have conducted a survey of the owners of homesteads.According to the results of the questionnaire, it is concluded that the majority of the owners of rural tourism farmsteads lack project management expertise, so most of them would like to gain more knowledge in project management.
