Summary / Abstract:

ENBenedictine Church Lieplaukė Church of St George was built in 1861-1862 with the funds of parishioners. Rector V.Juzumavičius took great care of its construction. The first church of Lieplaukė was mentioned in 1613; however, almost no information about it has survived. The church has been rebuilt several times. Lieplaukė Church became a parish church in 1844. In 1927 the church was renewed. Two magnificent churchyard gates of the neo-gothic style representing different periods testify to the reconstruction of the church. The Church has the plan of the Latin cross, with a large tower characteristic of architecture of the epoch of romanticism. All windows of the church are arched, the church door has the shape of an arch too, and the arched motif decorates the church tower. A large space of the Church has preserved an integral volume. A beam with a crucifix on it limits the presbytery. The Crucified above the beam bears the date of building the church – 1863. The church is covered with the ceiling of a flat form. There are decorated rose windows in the centre of the church and at the ends of the transept. The interior space is decorated with an ornamental dark blue edging made of symbols of the Church attributes, which adds features of classicist style. There are five altars, four confessionals of a sophisticated form, the pulpit, and two smart pews. Two archaic lodges of singers have survived at the end of the Church. Two rows of pews of circular profiles fill the space of the sacral building. Architecture of Lieplaukė Church is valuable as an example of folk wooden architecture of Samogitia of the end of the 19th century, which has preserved some old archaic forms.
