Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article continues the series of publications on Latvian place names of possible Lithuanian origin. There are phonetical, morphological and lexical criteria in determining Lithuanisms. This article is devoted to one of the phonetical features - to preserved consonants -š- and -ž- in the root of Latvian toponym. There are analysed more than 100 toponyms. Many of them are recorded close to the boarder with Lithuania. A lot of possible Lithuanian loan names were brought to Latvia with Lithuanian anthroponyms (most often - surnames). There are also many parallels with Lithuanian place names, too.
