Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article presents the biography, scientific activity, educational work, social duties and lifelong hobbies of professor Vacys Milius (08/12/1926 - 02/10/2005). According to the professor himself, his choice of the researched fields of ethnic culture was determined by the scientific needs of that time, the aim to review the subjects that had not been analyzed yet (e.g. folk crafts and windmills), and his hobbies (historiography, publications of sources). Quite many of his scholarly texts appeared in the prestigious series "From the History of Lithuanian Culture" and the first ethnological series "Ethnographic Research in Lithuania". He was the co-author of the first textbook of ethnology Features of Lithuanian Ethnography, and contributed to the preparation of the first volume of the Baltic ethnographic atlas. The series "Sources of Lithuanian Ethnography" was launched and the first publications were prepared on his initiative. Vacys Milius was a member of the editorial boards of numerous scientific publications (Chronicle of Lithuanian History, Monuments of Culture, Folk Culture, Chronicle of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science, Proceedings of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science, Our Land, Our Past, Soter, Žiemgala) and many local and regional monographs, and a contributor to various encyclopaedias. He devoted much attention to the series of local monographs Rural Districts of Lithuania. The list of his scholarly publications included almost a thousand articles and books; he was a scientific editor, a member of editorial boards, a reviewer or academic advisor of more than a hundred publications. Through his educational work in Vilnius University and Vytautas Magnus University, Professor Milius trained quite many scientists. He is deservedly called the chronicler of Lithuanian ethnology, as all his life he took Particular interest in bibliographies, which he later included in the publication Bibliography of Lithuania.A proof of the scholar's extraordinary universality and creativity is his abundant manuscript heritage accumulated during ethnographic field trips that began in 1948. In addition, Vacys Milius actively participated in public life - he was a member of the Lithuanian Radio and Television Board, the Ethnology Commission of Vytautas Magnus University and the Lithuanian Institute of History, the Executive Board of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science, the Board of the National Museum of Lithuania, the Board of the Adelė and Paulius Galaunė House, Martynas Mažvydas Bibliophile Club, the Lithuanian Bookplate Club and the Society of Samogitian Culture.
