LTStraipsnyje aptariamos socialinių medijų ypatybės bei pateikiamos jų taikymo galimybės užsienio kalbos paskaitose. Pasirinkti tyrimo metodai – mokslinės literatūros analizė, turinio analizė, apklausa. Tyrimo rezultatai pateikiami analizuojant ir lyginant aukštųjų mokyklų studentų ir dėstytojų apklausos rezultatus. Tyrimo pagalba aiškinamasi, kodėl studentai yra labiau linkę naująsias medijas pritaikyti studijų procese, t.y. būti ne tik pasyvūs stebėtojai, bet aktyvūs medijų vartotojai, o dėstytojai, priešingai, žinodami naujų medijų teikiamas galimybes, suprasdami ir pritardami jų reikalingumui, vengia diegti šias naujoves studijų procese.
ENScientists still can not explain whether the intensive development of social media is happening due to the need for modern technological solutions and human self-realization, or whether new networks, new communities themselves are able to attract new users, create more favourable conditions to communicate, find new technological solutions. Questionnaires and surveys reveal that more and more young people spend their time in the virtual space, i.e. search for information in the internet search systems, create contents and share them, communicate in social networks, forums. The article analyzes the viewpoints of students and teachers about the usage of social media in the process of foreign language teaching/leaning. On the basis of theoretical insights of scientists, the features of social media and peculiarities of their usage are being analyzed. Theoretical approaches are being formed by applying descriptive and analytical methods. The results of the research are presented by analyzing the survey results of students and teachers of the higher education schools. To sum up, it may be said that from the point of view of social media, students are more “flexible” and are more likely to adapt new media in the study process, i.e. not just passive observers, but active users of media. They can create information content in trial social networks, forums, blogs, and present information not only in the textual, but also visual format. Teacher, on the other hand, knowing the possibilities offered by new media and understanding and agreeing that they are necessary, avoid applying these innovations in the study process and name the following reasons of social media unattractiveness: wasting time, loss of concentration, indecisiveness, poor language of new media, unethical content, etc.
