Summary / Abstract:

ENThe aim behind this is to draw attention to the body of research work contrived by Antanas Venckus who was among the first in the soviet years to devote his main scientific energies to reserarch into Čiurlionis’ music. The discussion begins with the brief account on the unfavourable conditions, which hampered the more substantial accomplishment of such in terests. The special emphasis is put on a novelty of his methodology, abundance and accuracy of preliminary studies that disregarded any version of Čiurlionis’ pieces. Čiurlionis was Venckus’ focal theme during the entire span of his musicological career. To approach this theme, he has tried out different standpoints and has written on a variety of topics: Čiurlionis’ early works, symphonic poem ‘Jūra’ (The Sea), the aggregate of modes used in his music, modulation and its connections with the modes of folk origin, comparative analysis of chords in piano pieces from different creative periods, etc. The article on Čiurlionis’ Fugue В flat minor, the last work of the musicologist, is given probably the most comprehensive account in this text. In conclusion, the author points out the versatility of Venckus’ numerous contributions to the research ofČiurlionis’ creation and their present-day significance not only in terms of this particular research but also with regard to Lithuanian musicology in general.
