ENAt Vilnius University a psycholinguislic experiment was carried out to find out whether users of Modem Lithuanian relate meanings of verbs with alternating vowels, c. g. lieti - lieja, liejo 'to pour', and lyti - lyja, lijo 'to rain', šviesti - šviečia, švietė 'to shine’ and šveisti - šveičia, šveitė 'to scour', sekti - seka, sekė 'to tell' and sakyti - sako, sakė 'to say'. According to the results of the experiment, we can divide alternating verb roots into three groups: semantically connected, semantically disconnected and semantically remote.
