ENThis article reveals understanding of gender roles in the family by children with special educational needs. The hypothesis was that families form traditional patriarchal attitudes towards different gender roles in children with special educational needs. Pupils with mild or moderate learning difficulties, aged from 13 to 17 participated in this research; 102 pupils (51 girls and 51 boys) participated in the survey. With the help of a questionnaire it was analyzed how students with special educational needs perceive parents', children's duties in a family, understand the main features of boys (men) and girls (women); what means of education and behaviour are applied to boys and girls. It was determined that pupils with special educational needs mostly recognize women as creators of family, home atmosphere, family relationships, whereas men are considered to be partly responsible for children, but they mostly play the family providers' role. Girls in a family are encouraged to take care of the family, children, do household chores while boys are mainly associated with physical work. The hypothesis that families form traditional patriarchal attitudes towards different gender roles was proved. [From the publication]
