Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article introduces the prominent Vilnius photographer Aleksandras Jurašaitis (1859-1915). He learned photography while serving in the Imperial Russian Army, and his first photography studio was opened in 1894 in Bielsk, Grodno Governorate. From 1902, he continued his work in Vilnius, where his studio quickly became popular among the city’s Lithuanian community. Writers, artists, doctors, composers, lawyers, priests, and other members of the intelligentsia frequented his studio. As a result, the largest part of his creative legacy consists of portraits of cultural figures and promoters of Lithuanian identity. He also captured photographs of events from the Lithuanian national revival, including the participants and organisers. After his death, the studio remained in operation for nearly a decade, run by his wife and daughter Aleksandra. Over time, photographs by Jurašaitis and Jurašaitytė have become unique visual records that bear witness to history.
