ENThe aim of the survey is to identify and discuss factographic materials, published in Lithuania and abroad, on the creation of scientific institutions, and the evaluation of the impact of the process on the development of science and the public life of the inter-war period General historical works published in Lithuania and abroad give only a sketchy overview of the role of Lithuanian higher schools and their scientific divisions in the advancement of science. The prerequisites and conditions for the formation of these scientific institutions, organizational and scientific contribution of the scientists, creation of the academic milieu, results of scientific research and their dissemination, international relations of science, are analysed. in fact, in specialized works dealing with the concrete fields of science or individual scientists. In historiography, the organization of scientific work in the inter-war period is related to the foundation of Lithuanian University and other higher schools in which the environment conducive not only for the educational, but for the research activity, was created, laboratories and research facilities were established Higher schools played a role in the formation of other research institutions and trained researchers for them. The historians of science emphasize the importance of the formation of the Institute of Lithuanian Studies, the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences, noting, on the other hand, on the difficulties which the scientific institutions had to face in the formation period, on limited financial resources, lack of co-ordination and planning in science.Due to the ideological pressure, the works published in the Soviet period refused, in fact, the institutionalization of science in inter-war Lithuania, denied its influence to the modernization of science, and recognized the initiative and scientific heritage of only some scientists. Considerable scientific achievements of the period were mostly called attention to in the works of the Lithuanian emigration and foreign authors. These works have partially closed the gap in the contemporaiy historiography on the history of science. Even the demanding students of Lithuanian science admit that the University and other scientific institutions related to it, played an important role in further development of science.
