Alternative Title:
Elected rulers of Lithuania and Poland of the late 16th-17th centuries in Lithuanian and Polish historiography
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe work deals with the writings of Lithuanian and Polish historians on elected rulers of Lithuania and Poland, who were related to the Jagieł Ionian dynasty. The emphasis is put on the works of contemporary authors. Earlier historical works are only mentioned, a more detailed study is made when the contemporary historians refer to them, or enter into a polemic discussion. A survey of the works on Henri Valois, Stephen Bathory, the three rulers of the Vasa dynasty - Sigismund III, Ladislas IV, John Casimir, queens and princesses of the Vasa dynasty, as well as the two bishops, John Albrecht Vasa and Charles Ferdinand Vasa, sons of Sigismund III, is made. The bulk of the information on the above personalities is found in the works of the Polish historians, while in Lithuania no major works on the subject have been written Lithuanian encyclopaedias or textbooks usually supply general information on the above rulers and their epoque Ignas Jonynas, the author of biographical articles on Henri Valois and Stepheny Bathory, is a pleasant exception here In the Polish historiography the most popular figures are Stephen Bathory and Sigismund Vasa, the latter because of the long years on the throne; Ladislas IV and Henri Valois are less popular John Casimir has drawn many studies in relation with the wars which Poland and Lithuania had to wage during his rule. Until today, little has been written on the queens and princesses of the Vasa dynasty More works can be found on Louise-Marie de Gonzag. who was active in political and social life. The three rulers from the Habsburg dynasty - Anne, Constance, and Cecily Renata, have only been treated of in biographical articles. Anne Vasa, a sister of Sigismund III, a highly educated and independent woman who exerted considerable influence on her brother’s policy, has not received any extensive studies, either.
