Summary / Abstract:

ENA paradox of history determined that the history of the founding of pagan Vilnius is closely connected with the activities of the Franciscan Order. This fact has not been properly investigated to this day. The combining of archaeological material with data from the sparse written sources reveals the contribution the Catholics and the order protecting them made to the religious, social, and urbanistic development of early Vilnius. By investigating the specific features of the Franciscan Order, their establishment in Vilnius acquires a natural and logical basis. The invitation to come here was mostly influenced by the characteristic activities of this Order s monasteries. The Franciscans not only created conditions for the establishment of a Catholic community in Vilnius, they also carried out its diverse protection. Through their characteristic activities, they became one of the factors integrating pagan Lithuania into the Catholic world. The SW foot of Gediminas Hill is the most likely location for the first Franciscan church. Considering the nature of Franciscan activities, a Catholic settlement should have been founded beside it.The identification of this as the location of the first Catholic church and mission is rejected out of hand by two opinions that have prevailed up until now in historiography and among the broad public: the first that Vilnius' first Catholic church (which was built by Gediminas) is the Church of St Michael in SW part of the Old Town and the second that a theocratic centre (temple of Perkūnas) existed at the site of the present-day cathedral until 1387. The first traces of habitation in the SW part of Vilnius, i.e. Smėlynė, date to the last third of the 14th century. While the settlement at the SW foot of Gediminas Hill, i.e. the settlement of craftsmen with the clergy serving them, belonged to the ruler and was subject to him, the district in the SW part of Vilnius was a new phenomenon. Its settlement marks a stage in the further development of Vilnius as a city. [From the publication]
