ENEvery language is supposed to reflect social changes. Lexis is the most sensitive to various economic, political, and social changes. Though the main dictionary register is characterized by the constant use, however a part of out-dated words are not used, whereas the dictionaries are constantly supplemented with new words as it is necessary to designate recent concepts, modern things, persons, and up-to date places. Therefore, the composition of the dictionaries is developed in regard to the changes of political, economic, cultural, and social life. All the Modern Dictionaries of the Lithuanian language published in 1954, 1972, 1993, 2000, were considered to be of prescriptive nature; however the first edition differed a lot from the second one. All the above-mentioned dictionaries presented a large number of word variants. The present paper will discuss the alternation of the norms of the nouns, the possibility of determining the way of presenting the nouns that have been altered in the mentioned editions of DLKfi. Such investigations are important and necessary. Having analysed these dictionaries it becomes possible to understand and assess objectively the processes of standardization of lexis and to avoid discrepancy when compiling dictionaries and presenting necessary lexis of all fields. The presented analysis of the norms of nouns in DLKfi highlights the fact that, when issuing a new dictionary, norms have to be reviewed and altered. It is important as the presentation of a word or its variant in the Standard dictionary validates its use in standard language.
