Summary / Abstract:

ENThe translation of legal texts often creates more problems than similar technical translations since there is a special communication between the terms of law and the system. Every country has the system of legal terminology determined by the operating legal system of the country, its political and economic status, history and culture. Concentrating attention on legal documents, there is a risk to lose the expressional and influencing function, which is most often shown in communication between a representative of law and a non-professional. As the most part of communication of a special purpose depends on oneís empirical knowledge and is considered to be unambiguous, ambiguity in legal documents can be formulated on purpose. In this regard, legal texts are often compared to literary works where ambiguity is treated as the integral line of a work and should be preserved in the translation. The article presents the analysis of some specific problems of the translation of legal documents from Lithuanian into English.
