Title:
Phrase aligner: practical and theoretical use and challenges
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article introduces the programme Phrase aligner 1.22. It discusses some theoretical and practical advantages as well as problems related to the programme. Phrase aligner 1.22 is a programme used to align texts of two languages in fragments shorter than sentences. The result of its work is a list of equivalents, which can be used for translation memories in machine translation programmes, term banks, various research projects, etc. The programme has a theoretical value. A person working with Phrase aligner or a researcher using the retrieved material can visibly see the diversity of equivalents and various transformations that can be further analysed in order to achieve a better understanding of the differences between two languages. Phrase aligner 1.22 will have to be automated, thus some theoretical questions will have to be solved, such as what unit has to be aligned. Therefore this article discusses such notions as the unit of meaning or the unit of translation. Other issues have are also considered: the specificity of the Lithuanian language, the potential of the programme etc.
