Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Wołczko bearing the Działosza coat of amis were one of the wealthiest Lithuanian noble families in the Chełm province. The progenitor of the family was' Rokut, who appeared in the closest circle of Grand Duke Witold (Vytautas) from 1384. His immediate descendant was Wołczko Rokutowicz, who took part in the battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) in 1410, and assumed the baptismal name Piotr (Peter). As the Chełm starost, supported by King Jagiełło, he also established a large landed estate in this province. It comprised the town of Świerże and villages Równe, Kamień and Plawanice. After his death, Piotr Wołczko left the widow Małgorzata and two sons Andrzej and Piotr. Andrzej, who inherited Kamień, must have been older: he was present in the sources and 1454-1483. His brother Piotr became the owner of Świerże and administered the demesne in 1462-1504. The Wołczko brothers seldom appeared in the Chełm court together. They usually focused on their business within the inherited estates. The elder brother Andrzej died childless while Piotr outlived his son (died 1510), his inheritance having been taken over by his grandsons Wojciech and Jan Wołczko.
