Summary / Abstract:

ENRelationships between Poland and Lithania in the interwar period are an exceptional phenominon marked with mutual reluctance and hostility, which are actually unchanged until 1938. The main subject of the conf1ictwas mainly a territorial quarrel concerning Wilno and the minorities issue. In Polish society opinion Lithuanian territory was treated as traditionally connected with Poland. The federal idea pushed in eastern policy by Pilsudki 's camp exhorted to the ideas of self-determination of nations also included country subjectivity of Polish people living on Lithuanian, Belarusian and Ukrainian territories. Polsudski's initiative inducing the Lithuanians to the federation undertaken during releasing Wilno by Polish army ended in failure. Lithuania looked for support for the direction of their policy, mainly in Germany and in USSR assuming permanenet character of the conflict between Poland and those countries. In the first half of the thirtiesLithuania experienced serie s of political shocks that shook their previous international position: 1) settelment of the relationships between Poland and USSR in 1932, 2) increase of tension within 1932-1935 between German minority and Lithuanian authorities in Klajpeda that antagonized Kowno and Berlin, 3) signing Polish-German declaration not to use violence in January 1934. Over a dozen period of Polish-Lithuanian conflict was finally finished by Polish ultimatum towards Lithuania from March 1938.
