ENI was prompted to think about the relationship between intermediality and biodiversity, between hybrid media/forms and images of species coexistence by Šarūnas Sauka’s “Negative Attitude” (1982), a painting that resembles a negative of a black and white photograph. In this work from his early, photorealist period, the artist turned the remediation of the photographic image into a real puzzle, and added unexpected characters to the usual family portrait: a kangaroo poses for the photographer together with people. The aim of this book is to investigate the agential multiplicitous assemblages of intermediality and interspecies figuration in Lithuanian contemporary fine art. I am most interested in the relationship of painting, graphic art or drawing with photography and/or the language of words and the visions of biodiversity-phantasms, projects, nightmares - that unfold in the works. I not only deal with cases of intermedia! reference and/or intermedial transposition or remediation, but also with multimedia works (primarily composed of images and words), strange, hard-to-describe forms of mixed media, as well as with the work of multi-talented artists practicing various art forms. I combine the interpretation of the works (images) with an analysis of the material and discursive aspects of creative practices, and I try to conceptually link the strategies of hybrid media/forms to the themes of hybrid beings and interspecies collectives.
