Xawery Dunikowski and M. K. Čiurlionis: a common thread of metaphysical speculations and their possible roots in the 19th and 20th centuries' scientific discourse
LTStraipsnyje pateikiamas dviejų su Varšuvos dailės mokykla susijusių menininkų - Ksavero Dunikovskio ir Mikalojaus Konstantino Čiurlionio - lyginamasis tyrimas. Užuot ieškojus galimų abiejų menininkų tarpusavio įtakų, siekiama atskleisti bendrą metafizinių ir dvasinių spekuliacijų sąveiką, kuriai didelę įtaką darė to meto mokslinės diskusijos. Todėl tekste taikomos dvi metodologijos - viena susijusi su meno ir mokslo santykio analize, kita - su ezoterinių įtakų moderniajam menui tyrimu. Atskleidžiama su moksliniu diskursu susijusių problemų, tokių kaip evoliucija ir „ketvirtojo matmens“ klausimas, interpretacijų įvairovė ir įtampos, atsispindinčios moderniajame mene. Mažiau su šia tema susipažinusiems skaitytojams trumpai pristatoma vieno įtakingiausių XX a. lenkų skulptorių - Ksavero Dunikovskio - biografija ir šiuolaikiniai jo kūrybos tyrinėjimai. ENThe article presents a comparative study of two artists connected to the Warsaw School of Fine Arts - Xawery Dunikowski and Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. Instead of tracing the possible influences between the two artists, it aims to shed light on the common thread of metaphysical and spiritual speculations, strongly influenced by scientific debates of the time. Therefore, two methodologies are applied in the text - one concerning the relation between art and science, and the other regarding the study of esoteric influences on modern art. Furthermore, the article aims to show the diversity and tensions in the interpretations of problems concerning scientific topics, such as evolution and the problem of the “fourth dimension”, reflected in the modern art. Finally, to the readers who are less familiar with the topic, it briefly presents the biography and the current state of research on Xawery Dunikowski, one of the most influential Polish sculptors of the 20th century.
