ENIn the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries there were in Nieśwież (Niasvizh) two Jesuit houses: the urban college by the Church of Corpus Domini, founded in 1584 by Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł the Orphan, and the house of the third probation by the Church of Saint Michael, founded by Tobiasz and Elżbieta Grochowski in 1689. Th e diverse forms of pastoral activity of the Jesuit Fathers in Nieśwież were due to the multifunctionality of their churches. Th e Church of Corpus Domini was both a parish church and the mausoleum of the Radziwiłł family, whereas the Church of Saint Michael was a place of pilgrimage. Th e missionary activity of the Jesuit fathers was not limited to the city of Nieśwież. As a matter of fact, their missionary expeditions reached places more than 100 km far from Nieśwież. Moreover, the social scope of pastoral activity was wide, since Jesuits visited both beggars hospitals and the Radziwiłł court. Jesuit Fathers contributed to conversions of Protestants, Orthodox and Jews. Th ey also supported the Brest Union and propagated cults of saints – martyrs, the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Michael in particular. Pious confraternities helped them achieve these goals.
