Summary / Abstract:

ENSearch for a Lithuanian film in the 1930s, film production nationalization during the occupation of 1940 may be considered the onset of Lithuanian film. Professional Lithuanian film directors appeared with the political “thaw” atmosphere in the Soviet Union. Then in the Baltic republics the professional film standard was formed and striking personalities emerged on the scene. Fellow-feeling of artistic inquiries in pursue of displaying mental roots of a national character united the senior (V. Žalakevičius, A. Griškevičius, M. Giedrys, R. Vabalas, A. Žebriūnas) and the middle generation of Lithuanian feature film directors (A. Puipa, G. Lukšas, J. Vaitkus, R. Banionis) who had moulded a personal film model. Young Lithuanian film directors (Š. Bartas, A. Šiuša, V. Navasaitis, A. Juzėnas, K. Vildžiūnas) whose artistic activities were formed by social political changes proceeding due to the Independence are seeking cosmopolitic, common to all humans self-expression either complementing the Lithuanian film tradition with new aspects or turning their backs to it. This tendency reflects both the turning point and renewal of Lithuanian film under new conditions.
