ENIn the Polish historiographical tradition by the mid 20th century, two somewhat separate ways emerged, of understanding and interpreting the notion of “historyka”. The first dates back to the times of Joahim Lelewel and focuses around technical issues, related to the practice of historiographical writing. The second, refers to Marceli Handelsman, where we come across an understanding “historyka”, which combines a methodological reflection with theoretical considerations on the nature historical perceptions. Stanisław Kościałkowski’s Historyka is undoubtedly closer to the former tradition. It was created as a manual for students of history at the Polish University Abroad, on the basis of the author’s notes from classes conducted before 1939 at the University of Vilnius. From today’s perspective, its qualities are spelled mainly through its didactic layer. It is distinguished by simple and clear language, interesting examples calling back to both the Polish and general historiography. Like many researchers of his generation, Kościałkowski was convinced of the scientific status of historiography, a supporter of a clear separation thereof from literature and art. He also wanted a broadly understood professionalization of historical reflection, freeing it from variability, emotion, non-rational inspirations. [From the publication]
